Today, we're going to be talking about how to build your willpower and neurologically

0:31.3

change your brain in the process.

0:33.6

And today I'm going to blow your brain with a piece of neuroscience that is a discovery that came up in the past few years that there has been a ton of research on.

0:44.6

And basically, long story short, is every time you do something that is hard that you do not want to do, you grow a specific part of your brain that helps you do it

0:58.1

again in the future. It helps you resist impulses and stay on track towards your long-term goals in your

1:04.9

life. And for me, what we're going to talk about is so cool because I've always felt like willpower was a muscle

1:12.3

that I could grow. Like when I think about when I was younger, I was a surfer and stoner and partier

1:18.9

and I was lazy as hell. And then one day I started forcing myself to do things that I didn't want to do.

1:26.0

At 19 years old, I found myself in a sales

1:28.1

company and there was a room that was inside of this office and they called it the dungeon.

1:32.9

It's where the AC was and it was cold and it was like humid. And there was all of these old receipts of

1:39.7

people who had bought in the past. And I was like, I can just cold call all of them and see if they

1:44.0

want to buy some more. And I didn't want to do it. And I remember specifically, like a moment in my brain where I remember sitting there looking at the phone and being like, if I want my life to be different, I've got to do this. And I didn't want to do it, but I forced myself to make hundreds of phone calls a day.

2:06.6

And over time, doing this over and over again in many different ways in my life, developed a lot of willpower. And so let's talk in detail about this part of your brain, what science actually

2:12.0

shows us, and then how you can build your willpower as well. So there's a part of your brain

2:17.1

that's called the interior cingulate cortex.

2:20.1

I'm going to call it the ACC for the rest of this just to make things shorter.

2:24.2
