Summary

Hey there everyone! Today’s episode is packed with wisdom and grace, and I just know you’re going to love this conversation with pastor, author, and speaker Rich Villodas. We talk about how we can truly become whole in a broken and fractured world.  Listen in as Rich invites us to ask ourselves two questions:  1. How did we lose goodness, kindness, and beauty?  2. More importantly, how do we get them back into our lives?  The answers to both are especially valuable as we live in our walled-up and often hostile world.  Rich Villodas is the Brooklyn-born lead pastor of New Life Fellowship, a large multiracial church with more than seventy-five countries represented in Elmhurst, Queens. He enjoys reading widely, preaching, and writing on contemplative spirituality, justice-related matters, and the art of preaching. He's been married to Rosie since 2006, and they have two beautiful children, Karis and Nathan.  Listen in to learn more about: The five questions we can ask ourselves whenever we experience anxiety to protect both our emotional health and our relationships with others. Ways to cultivate a calm and loving presence in the middle of an anxious culture. Contemplative prayer and why it is important in our lives. Favorite quotes: At its core, sin is failure to love. If Jesus says that the greatest commandment is  to love God with your heart, soul, mind and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself, then the essence of  sin must be the violation of that.  A calm and loving presence is a presence that is not driven by your action or reaction. It’s a life that moves beyond emotionality and reactionality.  Contemplative prayer, at its core, is being present in the presence of God. It is friendship with Jesus.  The fruit of contemplative prayer is not simply greater self awareness or self actualization or religious goose bumps, it is how can I be more lovingly present with people. It begins with us befriending silence, normalizing  boredom and reframing distractions. In this episode I answered this question: How do we view happiness in a positive way? How do I pursue happiness without harm? I feel like we need this topic now more than ever. This is a great one. Now, I've had so much fun lately,

just updating you on where I am and where I'm going. So here's the update this week. I am

going to Charlotte, North Carolina, for extraordinary women. Again, you'll remember I was with

them a couple of weeks ago in Lynchburg. This one is extra fun because I'm taking James, my 16-year-old,

0:55.4

with me, and we're spending the rest of Saturday riding roller coasters. As you know, my perfect day

1:01.9

is speaking to a few thousand of my favorite friends and then riding roller coasters all afternoon

and evening. Best day ever. We have one of those like Halloween, after hours passes so we can

1:13.7

stay at the park to 11 or 12. Super sketchy. We don't want to do haunted houses. We don't like any of that.

1:19.3

Just let us ride the roller coasters over and over again. So I can't wait for that. Now, back to the show.

After we talk with Rich, it is coaching time, but I want to do something different. Instead of answering questions, I want to take a little break from that and share something that I've been working on. We're going to talk about this topic for a few shows. It's all about happiness. Happiness the right way. Should we pursue happiness? What's the biblical perspective of happiness and how can we

1:46.0

improve happiness in a way that helps us spiritually and emotionally and doesn't hurt us? What I've

1:52.3

been doing is I've found a lot of research that's really, really surprising, and I want to share it

with you. And for the final segment of the show, I'm bringing you a movie recommendation from my son,

2:02.5

and I'm bringing you a weird and delightful travel recommendation. Okay, without further ado,
