Just when New Yorkers thought it was safe to get back on the subway after two years of pandemic-laced fear, a gunman opened fire Tuesday, wounding 29 and turning a rush hour into a violent nightmare

for scores of Brooklyn strap hangers. This is an NBC News special report. Here's Lester Holt.

Good day, everyone from New York. We're coming on the air with breaking news. At least five people

were shot and

multiple injured in an attack that took place at a busy subway station this morning in Brooklyn,

New York. The shooting happened at the 36th Street station at the height of rush hour.

Authorities are looking for a suspect who was seen with a gas mask and an orange construction vest.

Right now, there is a massive police response on the scene as they search for the shooter.

It's a situation developing rapidly with new information pouring in.

We're getting an update right now, we believe, from officials on the scene.

The attack unfolded on a Manhattan-bound end train,

arriving at a sunset park subway station around 8.30 a.m. Authority said the suspect put on a gas

mask and threw two smoke grenades before firing 33 times with a Glock 17. That's a 9mm handgun at passengers as the train pulled into the station.
