I'm Gaelin Drouk.

Today, we're going to focus on the recent Left Work shift within the Democratic Party,

particularly on issues involving race, gender, and the economy, and how the Republican

Party is reacting.

There's long been a left-wing of the Democratic Party, but it's now larger and more influential

than it ever was while President Clinton and Obama were in office.

Most recently, reactions to Donald Trump's presidency and the success of Bernie Sanders'

campaign have played a part in that growth, but the current progressive movement also

has roots in the Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter movements.

And the left's ideas aren't just shaping the policies of mainstream politicians, but

of institutions and businesses as well.

There has also been a growing backlash on the right against what's referred to as woke

ideology and cancel culture.

In a pair of articles published on the 538 website this week, my colleague Perry Bacon

Jr. details the kinds of ideas that have gained currency on the left and how the right has

responded and how all of that could shape our national politics.
