Summary

We've talked a lot about soil types and texture, but not much about how soil holds on to water...there's more than just the soil texture at play!  Keep Growing, Kevin Support Epic Gardening Support Epic Gardening on Patreon Follow Epic Gardening YouTube Instagram Pinterest Facebook Facebook Group Buy the Epic Soil Starter Organic Fertilizer! Hello everyone we are continuing on with Water Week here on the podcast

0:06.7

side note does anyone remember that movie Water World with Kevin Kostner I'll remember

0:12.3

as they were holding up the dirt because the dirt was more valuable than any other resource in the world because the whole world was covered in water.

0:21.0

Well as gardeners, if we were in water world, we would be rich as heck.

0:26.5

All right, today we're talking about soil water retention and the things, the variables that can go into that and how they

0:36.2

determine how much water your soil will hold.

That's how water either stays in or leaves the soil

0:56.2

that you have.

0:57.3

And your particular soil's ability to retain water,

1:00.7

as we've talked about before,

1:12.3

sandy soil and silty soil.

1:14.0

1:19.2

particles of clay soil and they will pass more or less right through sandy soil, which is why clay

1:25.1

soil retains more water. However, that doesn't mean that clay soil is just

1:29.4

infinitely better than sandy soil. Sandy soil has its own unique benefits as well. It's a good

1:34.9

way to add extra drainage to your soil if it's simply holding onto too much water.

1:40.3

So the three soil textures obviously contribute quite a bit to the soil retention or the water retention of the soil.

1:47.5

However, that's not the only thing that matters as far as water retention and soil.
