Summary

Patrick Madrid explores a crucial topic with caller Ron from Staples, Minnesota: the proper way to show reverence to Jesus in the Holy Eucharist

Ron's Journey: Ron, a longtime listener and first-time caller, shared his increased participation in Eucharistic adoration thanks to the Eucharistic revival. He's noticed various reactions during these ceremonies and wanted Patrick's take on how to best show reverence.

Patrick's Insightful Response: Patrick emphasized that reverence for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament can't be overdone. Jesus desires to receive everything we can give, and we owe him every ounce of veneration possible.

  • Kneeling Tradition: In the Latin rite, kneeling during the consecration has been a tradition for over 1,500 years. However, some people with physical limitations might not be able to kneel, which is understandable.

  • Eastern Rite Practices: On the flip side, the Eastern Churches stand as a sign of respect. Both forms are valid expressions of reverence.

  • Different Expressions: Patrick pointed out that during Eucharistic adoration, you'll see different expressions of reverence—some people kneeling, others standing, and some even lifting their hands in praise. Every person is on a different point in their faith journey. All these acts, though different, should stem from a place of love and respect for Jesus.

  • Assume Good Faith: Because of the variety of practices post-Vatican II, Patrick encouraged us to assume good faith in others' expressions of reverence. The fact that they're present and worshiping is a testament to their love for Jesus.

  • Liturgical Guidelines: Patrick pointed out that in the U.S., the Bishops Conference states that kneeling is the proper posture during consecration. It should be the way we give worship to Jesus in this moment at Mass.

While the ways of showing reverence might vary, the important thing is that people are coming to adore Jesus and showing him respect in their way

Key Takeaway: "Assume good faith and recognize that diverse expressions of reverence all stem from a deep love for Jesus in the Holy Eucharist."

Will you visit Jesus in adoration soon? He loves you and desires to spend time with you!

How about Ron in Staples, Minnesota?

0:03.0

Hey, this is my first time calling in, but I've listened to you for a long time. Welcome. Just do a great job. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for all you do. My question is kind of around the Eucharistic Revival, and, you know, I've been to more adoration than I have been prior to because of what the processions, there's adoration at each of the stops and whatnot.

0:22.5

My question is the reverence given to the blessing sacrament during these ceremonies of exposition and all that type of thing.

0:31.0

You know, when Jesus enters the auditorium or wherever it is, you know,

0:35.4

there's just lots of different types of reactions to that.

0:38.6

You know, some people will immediately kneel, some stand and watch it come in.

0:44.8

And I just wanted to get your thoughts on the reverence.

0:48.4

You know, we should all be dropping to our knees and just other amazement and praise and glory, you know. Yeah, I understand. So my thought,

0:57.7

number one, Ron, is that we can't show too much reverence to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. I mean,

1:03.0

you can't overdo it. In other words, he deserves every ounce of respect and veneration that we can

1:09.7

demonstrate. Now, for different people,

1:11.7

it will be different. Some people who have back trouble or knee trouble, maybe they can't

1:16.4

genuflect or they can't kneel. Most people don't have those problems, so most people can kneel.

1:22.4

And in the Latin right of the church in the West, that has been the tradition for, again, the longest time,

1:28.5

1,500 plus years to kneel during the consecration, for example, or to kneel when the Lord is

1:34.4

presented to us in Eucharistic adoration. Now, in the Eastern churches, they stand, and they regard

1:41.0

that to be a sign of respect for Jesus, and they don't kneel during those times.

1:45.9

There's another expression of veneration that's valid.

1:49.6

It's just different from how we do it in the West.

1:52.6

So my thought is when you see this happen, and some people are standing, some are sitting, some are kneeling,

2:00.2

it seems to me that what you're seeing are different levels of awareness of the reverence due to Jesus.

2:09.6

For example, if we want to remove it from the context of Eucharistic adoration,
