The metaphor of the vine illustrates our connection to Christ. Spiritual fruit is the outcome of a life aligned with God. Abiding in Christ is a continuous, daily relationship. Pruning can feel uncomfortable but is ultimately for our good. Joy is a byproduct of our relationship with God, not circumstances. God's pruning prepares us for deeper fruitfulness. Each branch (individual) is distinct and capable of producing fruit. Our prayers reflect our alignment with God's will when we abide in Him. The process of sanctification is lifelong and involves ongoing growth.  Chapters 00:00 The Journey of Pruning and Growth 02:24 Understanding the Vine Metaphor 10:16 The Importance of Abiding in Christ 15:56 Joy and Connection in Spiritual Life 18:20 The Call to Allow Pruning for Fruitfulness Bible, Bible Study, Devotions, Devotional, Daily Devotional, Prayer, Jesus, God, Holy Spirit, Spiritual Growth, hearing God’s voice, Hearing God, Hearing Jesus, Praying, Pray, God’s Word, Scriptures Hearing Jesus, Knowing God's Voice, Female Prophets, Bible Study, Spiritual Growth, Christian Podcast, Faith Journey, Obedience, God's Communication, Personal Reflections, prophecy, faith, surrender, spiritual gifts, women's ministry, Christian podcast Learn more about your ad choices. Hey friends, I'm Rachel Grohl and I'm your host for the Hearing Jesus podcast, where I help you to know God and to make him known.

When my husband and I first got married, we bought a home that had been foreclosed upon.

0:16.9

And so it was a fix rubber for sure, but it's what we could afford at the time.

0:38.7

And one of the things that property included was two acres of land. And on the land was these grape bushes. I wouldn't say it was a vineyard because it wasn't that big. But there were these grape vines that had turned into bushes because they had gone years without any kind of pruning or care. And I didn't know anything about that at that point. And the first year

0:45.5

that we lived there, we just were so consumed with the house and getting things ready for our family

0:50.5

inside that we didn't do much of the outside. But it grew these really beautiful

0:55.9

looking grapes. And I went to pick some of the grapes and I realized that they did not taste

1:03.4

very good. They were either rotten or they were not ripe. There wasn't really a happy medium.

1:10.7

And they went from being like

1:12.5

not ripe to rotten right away, and then they just fell on the ground. It was not good fruit.

1:18.6

And so the next year, I determined that I was going to prune these things and work with what I

1:26.8

had and get some good grapes. So I pruned them

1:30.4

the next year. And again, I had no idea what I was doing. And I overpruned them, which meant we got

1:37.1

zero fruit that year. And what I realized was that this idea of pruning really took some knowledge that I did not have.

1:49.4

And I appreciate that every time I read John Chapter 15.

1:53.9

And so we're going to do John Chapter 15 in two parts like we did over the last couple of chapters

1:58.6

because there's two different sections that I really want to spend some time with. The first section is John chapter 15 where it talks about Jesus being

the vine. Now remember, scripture was written for us, but it was originally written to the ancient

2:14.0

Jewish people group. And so they were in first century Palestine, where vineyards were

2:19.2

very common. Their culture was steeped very deeply in agriculture, meaning all of these agricultural

2:26.8

metaphors that Jesus used were really speaking to the heart of their identity. And so I want you to think through this, and we're going to unpack it, and I'm going to explain

2:37.3

it to you.
