Summary

I had 2 questions come in this week about how to charge for photography. One was for commercial work and the other for prints. These are two different things, but oddly enough the answer is pretty much the same for both. So lets sit down today and talk about pricing, money, perception, cost and risk… And a cameo by Judy my cat at the end. This episode is sponsored by Lynda.com For a free 7 day, unlimited trial, please visit http://lynda.com/aop We'll do a meetup in Los Angeles next week. I'll put up a video soon with the details, but it will be Sunday evening, July 26, 2015. Mark your calendar and watch for the video! AND I will be speaking at General Assembly in Santa Monica. Today's question comes to us from Alejandro and Alejandro writes,

0:03.5

Dear Ted, I am starting to get photography assignments and I'm having trouble

0:06.9

deciding what to charge. In fact, this has become a very difficult issue for me.

0:10.8

How do you recommend one proceeds?

0:13.0

Alejandro, thank you so much for your question. In fact, this is the second time this

0:27.0

So we have two different sides of photography charging for a service versus charging for a print.

0:32.0

And what I find interesting and why I've lumped these two

0:34.3

questions together is because I think that the way you determine

0:38.0

pricing structure is actually very similar in both cases.

0:41.1

And I want to talk about three concepts with you today which I hope

0:44.4

will make some sense and I hope they will help you with your pricing structure and

0:48.0

so these three concepts are one perception, two, and three, risk.

0:53.4

And I want to talk about how all of these work together.

0:56.0

And if this is your first time to do a lot of this,

0:58.6

it is hard.

0:59.5

And I want to start by saying that discussions about money can be very difficult and

1:04.5

they can be very uncomfortable. I remember when I was starting out and it was

1:08.1

really hard because what I wanted to do was go around and look at my competition

1:12.2

and my colleagues and other people who were working

1:14.3

doing similar things that I was doing and just ask them what their pricing structure was.
