Hello and welcome to the TIFO Football Podcast. I am your host, Joe Devine, and today I am joined by my friend Alex Stewart. Hello, Alex. Hello. How are you? I'm very well. How are you? Good. Let's talk about Liverpool. Shall we? Yes. So last week, as many of you may have heard, I spoke to Sevastafibb about Tottenham, we gave them the once over,

0:21.7

and we're going to do the same today with Liverpool. We're going to start by talking about

0:26.3

their game with Crystal Palace at the weekend, which, the second half of which, at least, was very

0:31.0

exciting, wasn't it, Alex? But also we're going to talk about how it's kind of an exception to Liverpool's

0:36.5

rule of late, in that they've been very successful defensively this season.

0:41.5

So at least let's say that and we'll get into that shortly.

0:44.7

Starting with the Palace game, three goals conceded at home for Liverpool.

0:49.9

I think I'm right in saying is as many as have been conceded at home for Liverpool all season,

0:55.4

which is why we're sort of calling this the exception to the rule.

0:57.8

Let's talk about how they set up for the game, though,

1:00.5

because one of the biggest talking points with Liverpool this season is how they've changed from last season.

1:06.8

The focus of that, certainly from Christmas onwards, has been on a kind of formational change,

1:11.5

moving from the 433 to the 4231,

1:13.8

which you don't think is actually the key behind the differences this season, do you?

1:18.4

I think that formations can be, I don't want to say misleading,

1:24.4

but essentially if you're looking at a 4-2-3-1, that can be a variety of different

1:31.8

arrangements. So you could have the wingers in that pushing very, very high to make something

1:36.9

that looks more like a 4-2-1-3, or you could have it very lopsided in much the same way that France

1:42.5

did in the World Cup. So Blaise Metweedy and Killian and Bappe were technically occupying the same positions on opposite

1:49.6

flanks, but clearly one was much, much higher and much more aggressive, and the other was

1:54.2

sitting back, tucking in a little bit.

1:55.9

And we've seen that with Navi Cato with Liverpool.
