My question is this. Is the Phrygian mode appropriate to play over a minor 7 flat 5 to alter dominant chord?

That's a great question. Okay, so Frigian scale, the elusive Phrygian scale.

First of all, let's kind of just hear the sound of this scale for a second.

Right?

It just has this kind of, I don't know, has like a sound to it, right?

There's like a minor seventh chord. So the Phrygian is associated with the minor seventh chord, which we'll talk about in a second here. And, you know, when we're talking about scales and improvising for jazz, right? I mean, it is helpful, right, to have what I call these pitch collections available to us. That's the way I think of scales.
