You know him as Mr. B, the wonderful Mr. B, in a few moments.

But I want to launch this session, which is the first weekend of August,

to talk with you a little bit about why August is such an important month for us at STR.

You know, back in the early 18th century, there was a

massive missionary movement, and Hudson Taylor was part of that, opening up the China with the

China Inland Mission. But another one was William Carey, and he helped start the Baptist

Missionary Society in 1792, and his goal was to send

missionaries to place what never heard the gospel in, and his particular burden was India. I mean,

it was unbelievable. Nobody had done anything really like this before, and here he is going into a new

area that was filled with darkness and danger, yet he was

willing to do it, but he realized he couldn't do it alone.

And so he talked with one of his friends, Andrew Fuller, and he said, I'll go down into

the pit.

I'll go down.

I'll do it if you will hold the rope.

And so to him, this mission field was like a deep, dark mine, you know,

and he is willing to descend into it, but only if he had help.
