Last year, after Russia invaded Ukraine, the US and European countries responded by pounding

Russia with sanctions.

The President is trying to further increase the economic pressure on Vladimir Putin, including

suspending normal trade relations between the US and Russia.

A ban on imports of Russian coal comes into effect in Europe today.

Measures also include an import ban for Russian timbers, immense vodka, it prohibits entry

for Russian ships to EU ports, and a full transaction ban on four key Russian banks.

The set of sanctions imposed in Russia over the past 12 months has been really unprecedented.

Russia is now one of the most heavily sanctioned countries in the world.

There have been western sanctions on countries like Iran, like Venezuela, like not Korea,

but these are much smaller economies that are not as integrated and not as crucial to the

global economy.

Russia is big, and that's why those sanctions that were imposed so far are huge.
