Get to the freaking auto!

That really worked that way, Sherm. This is a show that has my name on it. It's kind of tough. Now here are your hosts, Brock Eward and Mike Salk. Hello.

It's about as fun as it gets right now here in the city of Seattle as the Mariners just,

they just keep winning, Brock, 15 of 16 games now, and they win again last night to clinch their spot in the postseason.

Obviously, an opportunity to continue that tonight with another win,

the magic number, down to one to win the AOS,

and then they can go on from there with a buy and the postseason,

everything else that is now on the table for this team.

Just walking around yesterday and chatting with people over at the ballpark,

a couple of nuggets that I picked up.

And the first one, Brock, as soon as I heard it, I was like, oh, no.

Oh, yes.

Brock is going to be insufferable.

When I tell this to Brock, it is just going to feed the ego.

This is a huge mistake.

But I was talking to some folks and said, you know, what made Cal different along the way? Not, we heard from, from Scott Hunter, about the leadership and the scouting before he was even a member of the mariner organization. But what made Cal different as he was on his way up being developed by these mariners? And there was a lot to the answer. you know they how hot he was able to get for, you know, a couple weeks at a time. And, hey, if you can do it for a few weeks at a time, it's possible. It's in there that you could build on that and do it longer and longer. But I thought, Brock, you would love the answer that he was not a people pleaser. And I don't know how many times I've heard you say in the last few months that leaders, that great players, the people at the very top, they can't be people pleasers. They just can't have that huge personality trait. Now that doesn't mean you've got to be a butthead. And I'm going to guess you'll further that story.

And that's not what those people meant by it or what they wouldn't. Well, I'll give you the quote. The quote was, he was hard to coach in all the right ways. There you go. Because he found ways to ask questions because he questioned almost everything. Not that he wouldn't listen. not that he said no, that he said,

all right, well, let's think about that.

Is that something that's going to help me?

And, you know, that self-assuredness,

not cockiness, just confidence and self-assuredness in who he was and his own ability ended up

being really important because he wasn't just there to please the coaches or the other people around him. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, I think it was a big deal 20 years ago. The guy, obviously, that I was around in my career that was at the very tip of the spear with that was Peyton. Peyton just did not care. Whether it was Bill Pullian or Tony Dungey or Jim Ursay, like if this isn't right, we've got to make it right.
