| 0:00.0 | This is the Michael K show podcast. Listen live weekday afternoon starting at three on 98.7 ESPN in New York, the ESPN app, the two-minute app, or on your smart speaker. |
| 0:12.5 | Hey Alexa, play 98.7 ESPN. |
| 0:17.5 | Round of the subway series, two games in city field tonight and both great pitching matchups, Severino, against Sherzer tonight and tomorrow's a beauty. |
| 0:26.5 | It's Verlander against Cole, two former teammates with the Houston Astros, the reigning Sai Young Award winner. |
| 0:33.0 | So it should be fun. We'll see exactly how it goes. Both teams kind of limping into this subway series, the Mets of Lost 8 of 9, the 8 of Lost 2 straight series, 2 out of 3 to the white socks, 2 out of 3 to the red socks. |
| 0:47.5 | One of the guys doing the game with me tonight on Yesen. We'll be doing it tomorrow on ESPN is David Cohn, former Sai Young Award winner and five time world series champion. He joins us now. David is Michael Donovan. Peter, how you doing? |
| 1:01.0 | I'm doing good guys. How's it going there? |
| 1:04.0 | Things are going well. What team is in worst shape right now? The Yankees or the Mets? |
| 1:11.0 | Well, I think it's, you know, it's probably the Mets because of the record. You know, I tend to go just to the overall record at this time of year as opposed to the standings and the division that you're in. |
| 1:22.5 | But the fact that the Mets are under 500, they're trying to figure it out. They're really relying on their veteran pitchers who are Hall of Famers that really need to pitch like Hall of Famers. |
| 1:32.5 | So, you know, they need those guys to step up and that's the big series for them against the Yankees. |
| 1:38.5 | Now, you know, Buck Schoelwalder, you know, they hear him say after what happened against the Braves that last game when they lost 13, 10, he was proud of the team. |
| 1:49.5 | I understand you want to try to stay positive, David, but don't play or see through that. I understand we live in an age where you've got to talk up the players, you can't go after the players. |
| 2:00.0 | But were you a little surprised he went the root of proud of his team after what happened against Atlanta? |
| 2:05.5 | You know, it's a valid question. I think we could sense that Buck was in a little bit of a search mode, so to speak, in terms of, you know, trying to find something to grasp on to, trying to kind of protect this team at the same time have their back, but at the other, you know, you kind of worry about credibility on the other hand. |
| 2:23.5 | So, you know, yeah, it is a valid question. That's not like Buck, you know, to sort of get that kind of an answer. |
| 2:29.5 | But nonetheless, I could, you know, my sense is that he's really trying to remain in the corner of his team and not kind of come out and give up on them or lambast them just just yet. |
| 2:41.5 | But that's part of Buck, Buck, your Walter survival mode, you know, he changed a lot over the years and adapted. |
| 2:47.5 | And how he handles the media is one of those ways where he's much different nowadays than he used to be. |
| 2:52.5 | All right. So David, the question is, I mean, you've seen them a lot. What is wrong with this team? Because the lineup is not that much different than last year. Now, obviously, no pedalonzo for the next month or so. But even before pedalonzo got hurt, they were still struggling to score runs. Their pitching has not been good. What exactly is the issue? |
| 3:11.5 | Well, I, you know, I really don't think we're seeing the finished product here, even though you thought that you did, but there's still some, some kids that have come up and taken over jobs, including the catcher and the third basement, baby. |
| 3:23.5 | And then there's another one in triple, they may be up sooner rather than later. So I think there's a lot of moving pieces going on here. And I think what's lost in the shuffle is on the defensive side. |
