Nathan Cartwright is my guest today. Nathan is the artist and founder of the Hive Gallery

and studios in downtown Los Angeles. The concept for the Hive came from Nathan's observation

at the Hangar 1018 that the artist zipped around like bees in a

hive. The space is large enough to hold about 30 artist studios. The upstairs

are private while the downstairs are open to the public.

Openings at the hive are an event.

It's definitely not your typical gallery scene.

There's music, people wander around in costumes, artists are painting in their studios, and there's all sorts of stuff going on.

The Hive has been showcasing artists in collaborating with other galleries locally and as far away as Tokyo since 2005. It is my pleasure to introduce you to the King B. Nathan Cartwright.

Tell me a little bit about the Hive Gallery and how it got started.

The Hive is a Gallery and Studio space downtown.

I came to LA as an artist.

I was a working artist and kind of settled myself into a warehouse area in East L.A.

Right at the beginning, actually maybe even pre- Downtown Art Doom, this was in 2002.

So there wasn't a lot going on downtown, and kind of, we called it Zombiland.
