football scrimmage, 16-year-old Zach McLeod suffered a hit to the head that caused an acute internal brain bleed,

leaving him with severe brain damage. Over the last 11 years, he has had to relearn how to walk

and talk and through it all. The McLeod family's faith has brought them closer as family and stronger

each day. Despite Zach's injury, the family continues to attend

football games and support and socialize with their friends and students, but Zach's mother still

can't help but feel like she has, quote, lost her son to the game. Football safety has been a

growing concern around the country, and with the season beginning in the next few weeks,

the McLeod family continues to fight for change in their new book, Hit Hard. Pat and Tammy open up about Zach's injury and the evolution of grief and gratitude and belief. Pat and Tammy,

thank you very much for being with me today. It's great to have you here. Tammy, let me just start with you, if I may.

You know, just go back to that day. I'm a parent of athletes and a football player, and we all

know what it's like to be at those games. It's exciting and fun and also always very nerve-wracking

because everybody has the same concern that you experienced.

So we actually weren't at the game because we were at the first meeting of the year for college students of Boston.

We're both Harvard chaplains.
