The task of the modern educator

is not to cut down jungles,

but to irrigate deserts.

That is a quote by C.S. Lewis that has become a motivator for me

as I have pastored and preached and taught the scriptures

to teenagers and young adults over the last decade. and

is not to cut down jungles but to irrigate deserts.

And in its context, Lewis is talking about educational systems

and how we educate young people and whatnot.

But for me, I've always related to that quote

when it comes to theology and how we tend to think about God.

Because what I've found is that in myself

and in the young people that I minister to,

we tend to have this, we tend to drift

towards this view of the heart along with its passions and desires as if it's this

overgrown jungle full of life and beauty and fun and excitement but also a

little bit of danger and a little bit of bad things and the role of God in our life is to come in and kind of cut out some of that stuff so that our life can be safe and quite honestly boring and not fun and not exciting.
