In this episode, I look back at a Baptist abuse scandal that made headlines in the early 00’s.

Russel Hirner was the principal of a school affiliated with Longview Baptist Temple (now named Emmanuel Baptist Church) in Longview, Texas. He is currently serving time in prison for sexual abuse of minors.

His son, Joshua Hirner, sat down with me to talk about the environment at Longview, his dad’s double life, and the facts he slowly pieced together while his dad was behind bars.

Hey, everybody, welcome back to the Bridger Boys podcast. I'm your host, Eric Swazinski. I'm a former fundamentalist shedding light on the darker sides of the church, on the pulpits to the pews. On today's episode, I'm joined by Joshua Herner. He's the son of former Longview Baptist Temple staff member and Christian school principal, Russell Thomas Herner. In the mid-2000s, Russell Herner was convicted on multiple counts of

But I really want to dive in for our listeners, first and foremost, like,

just set the stage for me what Longview was like.

1:49.9

Like, what are your early memories there?

And what was that environment to you at the time?

1:56.0

I mean, everybody's got their own story.

1:57.9

Everybody experiences everything different.

But just kind of looking back, I just remember it being really similar to how you would herd cattle, always keeping everybody together, making sure they're doing the same thing, eating the same thing, not wandering off or anything, making sure they're all in the fence type of situation.
