back a long, long, long way and it's worth sort of framing that in the first place, this

It certainly does, it started actually immediately after the thalidomide scandal and what I was

surprised about was that one of the three drugs that was mentioned in the trial for the thalidomide

people was a drug called Duganon, now Duganon is the German word for primordos and that was

quite a shock to find out that that had actually been referenced as causing harm before we

actually had it in the UK. It came to the UK about 1957 and in 1958 Dr Edwards wrote to

the committee on safety of medicines who were the regulators at that time to say I have a great

concern about this drug, primordos. Now primordos was two tablets that had 40 times the strength

for neural contraceptive and what was it meant to do primordos? It was meant as a hormone pregnancy

test, a neural hormone pregnancy test and he had actually raised concerns because he said

my feeling is that huge amount of synthetic hormones in early pregnancy it could affect the fetus

that warning was just suppressed so the regulator decided not to take any notice of it.
