Summary

According to the 2022 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world needs to cut carbon emissions drastically to avoid the worst effects of global warming. But that’s not all. In addition to reducing emissions, we also need to remove 6 to 10 billion tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year by 2050.

This week on How I Built This Lab, Guy talks with Jan Wurzbacher, co-founder and CEO of Climeworks. They discuss how Jan and his team built the world’s largest direct air capture facility, which filters carbon dioxide from the air and stores it permanently underground. Plus, Jan’s optimistic vision of how humans can achieve the goal of reversing climate change.

0:14.7	So most everyone has heard the grim predictions about climate change.
0:19.0	That in order to keep our planet from warming more than 4 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of
0:23.8	this century, we have to reduce carbon emissions by more than half.
0:28.6	And we have to do that by 2050.
0:31.4	But that's not all.
0:32.4	And I'm not trying to depress you here, but it won't be enough to just cut our global
0:37.8	carbon emissions in half.
0:40.2	Just to keep our planet from getting unsustainably warm over the next 50 years, we also have to remove
0:46.7	carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
0:49.1	So to be clear, not only do we have to stop producing it, we also have to suck it out
0:53.7	of the air.
0:54.7	In fact, we have to suck a lot of it out of the air.
0:58.2	The IPCC, the United Nations Group that represents the scientific consensus on this stuff, says
1:04.0	that by 2050, we need to remove 10 billion tons of carbon from Earth's atmosphere each
1:11.4	year.
1:12.6	This is a huge monumental task.
1:15.6	The good news is, the technology to do this exists.
