Smart speakers like Amazon Echo or Google Home are seemingly everywhere these days.

Millions of Americans have one.

But despite their popularity,

there are some real privacy concerns

that the average person, maybe you,

maybe someone you know, might not know about.

Joining me to talk about smart speaker privacy and what you can do to minimize other people from listening in on your personal life is

Hi Teddy.

So why do we need to be concerned about smart speakers and tell me like what sort of data do they collect on us?

Well how concerned you are I guess depends on how much you care about your privacy, right?

Obviously you can learn a lot about somebody based on the things they ask a device or

the you know commands they make, the music that you like,

the things you buy, whatever, it could be used to make sort of a comprehensive profile, like who you are and what you like,

and then you have to ask how are the companies that you're maybe

giving that information to using it. So Google for instance may use it for what you do on

other products that you use for Google and maybe target adds to you on those

products unless you go to privacy preferences and tell them not to do that.

Are there any kind of big pitfalls you think that people aren't thinking about when they buy one of these

speakers? I think the thing that people don't know about and are most alarmed about is that they

are actually listening to you all the time and they're recording the things you say so they're not
