Summary

Henry V of England was the archetypal medieval king, a warrior par excellence whose example inspired English kings for centuries to come, the victor at Agincourt and conqueror of much of France. Tides of History's returning champion guest, Dan Jones, joins me to talk about his new book on Henry V, the king's childhood and adolescence, and why he matters today.

The most successful of the mall, the true archetype of the medieval king, was Henry the 5th of England.

0:55.6

He ruled for less than a decade but in that time he won victory after victory expanding England's possessions in France from a small foothold to the entire northern half of the country.

1:00.8

Had he survived a bit longer, the two crowns might have been united for good as he had intended.

1:05.6

Or maybe not, because Henry died young, aged just 35. We'll never know. His early death brought him out of reality and into the realm of legend,

1:14.7

where he's stayed ever since, the subject of some of Shakespeare's greatest work, books and movies.

1:19.9

Today's guest is the foremost popular historian of the Middle Ages and he has a brand new book coming out on Henry the 5th entitled Henry the 5th the astonishing triumph of England's greatest warrior king.

history, most recently Powers and Thrones, a new history of the Middle Ages, all of which I highly recommend. Dan has also

Dan, thank you so much for joining me today.

Always, always a pleasure. So in the back and forth leading up to getting this
