Summary

Janet responds to an e-mail from a parent who says her 4-year-old has lately become very demanding for attention. “She won’t let us talk with friends, family, or over the phone. It has to be about her all the time.” She is also being defiant, especially in public, and ends up crying when she doesn’t get her way. This mom feels her friends and family have cast her as a ‘bad mom’ and wants Janet’s advice about “how to stop this excessive attention seeking, defiant behavior.” For more advice on common parenting issues, please check out Janet's best-selling books on audio, FREE with a 30-day trial membership at Audible (adbl.co/2OBVztZ). Hi, this is Janet Lambsbury. Welcome to Unruffled. In this week's episode of Unruffled, I'm going to be responding to the parent of a four-year-old daughter who is concerned that her daughter seems to need constant attention to the point that she says she's avoiding taking her out or having friends over because her friends and families see her as a bad mom. She wants to know what she can do to stop this excessive attention seeking.

Summer is here, which means our skin gets dehydrated by hot weather, sun exposure, even air conditioning. What do we do? Well, if you're like me, you're constantly confused by what's a best skincare product. They can be expensive and the regimens are complicated and time consuming.

And if you're a busy parent, you barely have time to watch your face, right? Well, did you know you can actually swallow skincare? Now you can, with rituals, Hayasera, a new once a day capsule that enhances your skincare routine from the inside out.

Hayasera includes two of the best clinically studied ingredients shown to help hydrate skin and minimize wrinkles and fine lines. And like all ritual supplements, Hayasera is made with traceable non-GMO vegan, gluten and soy-free ingredients, which is just one reason I'm such a fan of this company. Try it out for 90 days. I did. I think you'll see the results.

Summers fast approaching and it's going to be a hot one. So hydration is more important than ever. Even everyday activities like a trip to the playground, date the beach or an amusement park, walking the dog, house cleaning, long airplane flights, a night on the town. All these can cause dehydration, sap our energy and keep us from feeling our best.

That's why liquid IV is a smart addition to your daily self-care routine. Liquid IV hydrates twice as fast as plain water, has more electrolytes than even traditional sports drinks and five essential vitamins. It's totally convenient. You can carry liquid IV sticks in your purse or glove compartment. And it comes in lots of great tasting flavors, including strawberry lemonade, which is my favorite. In fact, I've already made two big orders.

Here's the note I received. Hi Janet, I'm a huge follower of your work. I have a four-year-old daughter who's very sharp, observant and talkative.

3:17.0

Lately, she has started interrupting us a lot. She won't let us talk with friends, family or over the phone. It has to be about her all the time. It is becoming very embarrassing.

3:28.0

Our friends have started commenting on the same and I feel defeated. Even when she's playing or coloring, she will call for our attention.

3:35.0

Lately, she has also started being a lot more defiant, especially in public.

3:40.0

Won't hold hands on the street. We'll ask for other kids' toys, we'll cry in public, etc.

3:46.0

It's gotten to a point where I avoid taking our out or having friends over. I literally am crying as I write this because my friends and family see me as a bad mom.

3:56.0

I don't know what I can do to stop this excessive attention-seeking, defiant behavior of our daughter.

4:02.0

PS, my husband changed his job so we switched cities four months back. He has been traveling since then and is home only for weekends and even then he is working. Maybe our daughter is still processing this change.

4:14.0

Please, please help me out. Thanks.

4:18.0

Okay, so I love that she included this PS because I imagine her daughter is still processing a change moving houses switching cities four months ago.

4:30.0

That was a big loss for this girl. Even the most positive change in terms of moving is also a loss of the familiar.

4:41.0

Perhaps that was the only home that she knew and regardless, I'm sure she had routines there. She was comfortable moving is tough.

4:50.0

So that's very likely part of this and then whatever the parents are feeling, the stress that they might have is also going to be added into the mix because children absorb that and they process it out in a sense reflected back to us.
