Yeah, I know. Oh, gosh. The minute you mentioned Hellboy 3, the internet goes aflame, right? And Ron Perlman's sitting right here where I'm sitting right now, saying, yeah, we want to make it. Of course we do. We owe it to the fans. I still do. I'll do it now at 75 years old. I agree with him on every point. And Selma Blair, Ron Perlman, lman and i all agree we'd love to come back

characters in tv and film oh you how do you know when a character is something special that you want to create?

0:41.9

Oh, well, I think they all are in their own way.

0:44.4

I think when the writing is really good, you know, when I get a character that has been so

0:48.8

well developed and has backstory and has things to chew on as an actor, that's when I'm like,

0:53.5

okay, this is going to be good.

0:55.5

So when you're playing a monster, though, or something in a heavy makeup, what's going to make

1:00.8

that character have backstory? Again, the writing comes into play, but also the director. And that's

1:05.3

like doing so many films with Guillermo del Toro has been, he's the director that gets it.

1:10.0

He knows how to give his monster's leading man qualities. Does that happen when you're meeting with the director for the initial pitch if you want to sign on or when you're reading the script? The script tells me what I need to know first and if I like it then I'll want to talk to the director, yes. And then I'll get their vision of how they want to tell that story that I just read, right? And that makes all the difference. And if you're talking to somebody who knows what they're doing, it's like, oh, this is going to be a good fit, you know? Right. So for, if you're working with Guillermo, how far along in the process do you normally have that conversation with him? Is this years before even filming? Well, right. When I've done six movies with him and I did a recurring character on his TV show,

The Strain.

1:47.1

So having worked with him on seven different projects now, when he says,

1:53.0

doggie, I want you for it, I'll say yes.

1:55.5

He's the one director I say yes before I know what the hell he wants me to do.

1:59.5

What has been the most surprising character that Kiermos wanted you to do? I think it was the amphibian man from the shape of water because he's the romantic leading man of the movie. And he said it to me, Dougie, you're going to be the romantic leading man of this movie. And I was like, oh, in a fish suit. Am I hearing this right?

2:17.5

You know, but he pitched it to me.

2:20.4

We were filming, two of his ghost ladies in Crimson Peak.

2:25.0

Another stretch might, by the way.
