Trust in institutions is one of the key indicators as to whether

something like conspiracy theories are going to be more effective.

So one of the reasons why some of these attempts to spread

disinformation have at least theoretically been more effective

or been far more reported on it's because the general American trust in institutions is far lower.

To be honest I have mostly checked out of Brexit a couple of years ago.

It felt as though everything was changing every day and nothing was changing over the course of a week or a month or a year

Basically as I am recording this there is still just about as much uncertainty about what

form Brexit will take as there was in the days after the referendum. But there's

something else that we can already deduce from the way in which Brexit has gone.

And that is that we tend to have an assumption about politics, but there are certain safety valves,

which will make sure that absolute cows will be held in bay.

That if something is going wrong, there's a set of people who can step in and make sure

to bring it to a minimally rational and safe conclusion.

Given how close we are now to a chaotic hard Brexit given how little collective

action people are capable of in the British political system and one of the

countries which a few years ago might have seemed

like one of the better ruled in the world, I think we need to question that assumption.

There's no guarantee that one day humans will wake up and coordinate to do the right thing about climate change.
