Summary

This week, Gaby finds a financial literacy unicorn. Nan Morrison actually learned a lot about money from her parents, which is a luxury a lot of us don't have. Luckily, she's working to make financial literacy education better, as CEO and president of the Council for Economic Education. Next up, it's Cristen Conger and Caroline Ervin, hosts of Unladylike, a podcast about what happens when break the rules. We tasked them with digging up some history and sociology around the ways gender and sexism works its way into our financial lives. And Herman Brodie, a behavioral economist looks at why it's so hard to trust the people who handle our money. And finally, one of this show's producers, Lindsey Kratochwill shares a little bit about her own financial education, and how it couldn't prepare her for what happened once she became an adult.  Learn more about your ad choices. Hey Gabby done, bad with money, you know the drill. Sorry my voice sounds a little crazy.

I spent a week at a camp where I was screaming. It's cooler than it sounds. Guys this week we're

0:35.8

talking about fun stuff, okay? Every week is fun, right? I wanted to be a little nicer to you this week.

0:43.1

Last week was a doozy and if you've decided hey I should just never spend money ever again. I'm

0:49.9

gonna go off the grid. I'm gonna live in the woods like I just did this past week while camping.

0:55.9

Well maybe this episode will be useless to you. But regardless for this week's show I wanted to

1:01.9

learn a little bit more about how we learn about money. We've talked about a lot of extremes this

1:06.3

season but sometimes we and our money exist in the murky middle. We have some money, maybe not as

1:13.3

much as we'd like but we're doing all right and we still have no idea what we should be doing with

1:18.0

our finances. You've heard me say it before on this show when it comes to financial education. I

1:23.2

feel like there was a class in school that everyone else went to and I was somehow sick that day.

1:28.4

Well it turns out that probably wasn't the case but there are two general scenarios that might have

1:33.7

actually happened. Uno said but true there was no class or dose, there was a class but it was ineffective.

1:42.6

First up we're gonna talk to someone who actually learned a bunch of important skills and knowledge

1:46.2

about personal finance from her parents. Well I think I was really fortunate and that I always had

1:51.6

this kind of education at home. My parents were really focused on teaching me how to make good

1:57.3

decisions about money, about spending. They included me in big spending decisions that our family

2:03.9

was making. I still remember my parents explaining to me that they saved up all of the money that they

2:08.8

needed before they went and bought a new car and I remember seeing my father count out like 20 after

2:15.2

20 after 20 to buy this car. So I got it when I was really little and when I had the opportunity to

2:22.8

do this as a career after spending a long time in the business world I just jumped at the opportunity.

2:29.0

That's right guys we found a unicorn, a financial unicorn. Some of you listening will get that
