Summary

It’s a new month, so we have a new theme—Book Club! For the next few weeks you can look forward to conversations with amazing authors from the Balanced Book Club.

Today I'm joined by Clarkisha Kent to celebrate the launch of her new book Fat Off, Fat On: a Big Bitch Manifesto. Clarkisha is a Nigerian-American writer, culture critic, former columnist and author. She is also the creator of the Kent Test, an immediate litmus test designed to evaluate the quality of representation that exists for Black women and women of color in film and other media.

Together we discuss her new book, how she handled writing such a vulnerable story, the ways humor can support our healing, and why media literacy is a critical skill.

We Also Talk About…

  • The value of the public library
  • The dynamic nature of being human
  • How no one knows what they’re doing with their life
  • The many flavors of exploitation
  • The effectiveness of getting mad sometimes
  • The necessity of being critical of the media you’re consuming

Welcome to Balance Black Girl. My name is Les. I'm your host and I appreciate you tuning in.

Each month on the podcast, we're diving into a certain theme. In February, we talked about

0:16.8

all things intimacy, and this month, our theme is Book Club. Each week, we're talking to black

0:22.1

authors on their book release dates to give you reading and spell all month long.

0:27.7

Now, books have been a big part of Balance Black Girl since the beginning.

0:31.7

Shortly after starting this podcast in 2018, I hosted a book club to read Becoming by Michelle Obama,

0:38.0

and that ended up being the best book club because a few months later, when she went on her

0:42.7

becoming book tour, we were invited to have a private book club with her. So shout out to my

0:48.9

original Balance Black Girl book club members in Seattle back in 2018 and 2019, because that was

0:55.6

such an amazing experience. And honestly, after that, it's been a little hard to top.

Interest in the book club naturally increased and running it just became really stressful and a lot

1:08.5

of pressure for me and frankly, I completely folded. I can handle pressure well in some instances,

1:15.9

but when it comes to like event things, I fold, I've learned this about myself and book club

1:22.6

sadly went away. That iteration. However, we now have an Async Book Club in our Geneva Community

1:31.4

Club, Balanced, where we have monthly book club picks and a chat room to discuss the books that

1:37.5

we're reading. So the book club has evolved quite a bit. We have a link to our Geneva group

1:43.5

in the show notes. So join us there if you want to connect with other listeners and get some book

1:48.7

in spell. Now, as I was planning podcast episodes, I noticed there were several incredible books

1:53.7

written by people I admire dropping this month, March 2023. And I thought let's bring these authors

1:59.9

to the podcast and celebrate their book launches with them in real time. Today, I'm joined by

2:06.2

Clarkecia Kent to celebrate the launch of her new book, Fat Off, Fat On, A Big Bitch Manifesto.
