HEADLINE: Space Force Awards Contracts to SpaceX and ULA; Juno Mission Ending, Launch Competition Heats UpGUEST NAME: Bob Zimmerman SUMMARY: John Batchelor speaks with Bob Zimmerman about Space Force awarding over $1 billion in launch contracts to SpaceX for five launches and ULA for two launches, highlighting growing demand for launch services. ULA's non-reusable rockets contrast with SpaceX's cheaper, reusable approach, while Blue Origin continues to lag behind. Other developments include Firefly entering defense contracting through its Scitec acquisition, Rocket Lab securing additional commercial launches, and the likely end of the long-running Juno Jupiter mission due to budget constraints.

This is CBS Eye on the World. Here's John Batchelor. I welcome Bob Zimmerman. He keeps the website behind the black. We begin with space engineering and an award from Space Force to SpaceX and ULA's ULA.

0:23.1

Bob, remind ULA, we haven't talked about it for some time.

0:26.0

And what is the significance of the Space Force using them both?

0:29.2

Good evening to you.

0:30.2

Good evening, John.

0:31.0

Well, Space Force needs to get satellites launched,

0:33.8

and so it has a variety of contractual arrangements

0:36.8

with a multiple number of rocket companies.

0:40.7

And SpaceX and ULA are right now the two most, the two that it relied, the Space Force relies on the most because they have the launches that are large and can put up big payloads and are operational.

0:54.5

The third company, Blue Origin, is also on their list, but they have a new Glenn rocket

1:00.1

that really isn't operational yet, and the Space Force has not certified it yet for use,

1:05.0

so it can't award contracts to them.

1:06.7

So the Space Force has announced a new round of contract awards beginning in 27.

1:13.4

These contract awards are worth more than a billion dollars, and they gave it to SpaceX and to ULA.

1:19.6

SpaceX received five of the seven launches and was going to be paid $714 million for those five launches.

1:27.2

ULA was awarded two launches for $428.

1:30.7

Once again, SpaceX can launch cheaper and get payloads up more than ULA, less, more than

1:36.4

cheaper than ULA, which doesn't have a reusable rocket. It's using its Vulcan rocket,

1:41.6

its new Vulcan rocket, which is not reusable.

1:50.1

But either way, this is big money, and it's an example of where there is a real need for launch services for both the military and the commercial space.

1:54.7

This is why Blue Argin being so late and getting new Glen operational, they're losing

1:58.8

business because of that.
