A birthday trip to paradise turned into a fight for survival on the cliffs of Oahu.

On March 24, 2025, Ariel Koenig, a nuclear engineer, expected a day of celebration with her husband, Dr. Gerhardt Koenig, an anesthesiologist.

But after months of marital tension sparked by an emotional affair,

prosecutors say the doctor had a darker dose of medicine in mind. According to testimony in a

Honolulu courtroom, the celebratory hike along the Polypuka Trail devolved into a deadly struggle.

Ariel recounted the moment her husband allegedly grabbed her near the edge of a steep cliff

and attempted to push her over.

She claimed he pulled a syringe from his backpack and eventually bashed her head repeatedly

with a rock.

She survived only by fighting back and screaming for help until

two nurses hiking nearby intervened. Gerhard Koenig now faces a charge of second-degree attempted

murder. While his defense acknowledges the physical altercation, they argue there was no premeditation

portraying it instead as a spontaneous scuffle gone wrong. This case raises questions about

the calculated nature of the attack and the damning evidence of a reported FaceTime confession

to his own son.
