Well, you know what? Both the Colonel and I thought that was a pretty sharp question.

Why do we say heads up when we need to duck?

Heads up is exactly opposite to what you want the person to do.

If you're trying to warn a person who's about to get

hit by a wrecking ball or some gigantic thing

that will not only kill him but turn him to dust, then you don't

want to say heads up, which would cause the person to look up from his book, sit up straight

in his chair and say, why, I wonder what you mean.

It's not that at all.

What you want him to do is say, hey, stupid, flatten out immediately.

Duck.

But you know what? We don't, we say heads up.

Although, come to think of it as possible,

that saying came about because it was originally started by someone who threw the wrecking ball at the

guy. He wanted the guy to get hit, so he said, hey Bill, heads up. What's that time? I say, pick your head up. Smash.

So you know what? Maybe that's it. it in any case why do we say heads up when we need to duck that's one of those great mysteries not just of American slang but of little phrases we say all the time anyway, that don't quite make sense when we take a good look at them, but are wonderful.
