this week's episode the Academy announced these huge changes to the way that the Oscars are going to work, both in this coming year and then in the future.

So Richard and I reconvened to talk about this.

I'm just going to read what's in the tweet, which is as far as I can tell most of the information that we have.

There's going to be a new Oscar category designed around achievement in popular film.

We don't know what that means beyond that. Starting in 2020, they will, the Oscars will air a little bit earlier. It will be February 9th,

whereas they've usually been at the end of February or sometimes early March. And then they are planning

a quote, more globally accessible three hour telecast, which according to other reports

will involve them giving out some awards during commercial breaks and then

airing them later on in an edited format something.

initial reaction to this news? Well, multifaceted. I hated when the Tonys did it and

I in terms of not airing certain categories, technical categories, like these are people who work

very hard and they're asking for one moment, you know, sort of in the spotlight and the Academy

now seems to be following the American Theater Wing and denying them that moment,

you know, even if they show it later, and I think that's a shame.

Obviously we'll get into the new category thing which has potential for ruined and, you know,

and I have some theories about why they're doing it this year. potential for

our purposes, like I'm really curious to see what shortening the season is going to look like.
