In the year 1801, off the rugged coast of Wales stood the remote Smalls Lighthouse, a solitary guardian against the ferocious sea.

Two men, Thomas Hal and Thomas Griffith, were stationed there,

isolated from the world by miles of unforgiving water.

Built in 1775, the Smalls Lighthouse stood on a tiny, rocky outcrop miles from the nearest land off the Pembrokeshire coast.

Perched on nine sturdy oak pillars that allowed storm waters to search through.

The lighthouse's small hut offered minimal shelter from the fierce storms

that swept the sea. Known as the most perilous of all English lighthouses, it left its

keepers vulnerable, as any disaster out there meant rescue as far from guaranteed. At the time

lighthouse keepers typically spent four to six months on duty with only one

other companion. In the spring of 1801 Thomas Howell and Thomas Griffith began their stint at the Smalls

Lighthouse.

The two men who had previously worked together at another lighthouse did not get along at all.

Their adversarial relationship only added tension to their isolated watch

over the unforgiving sea. Two months into their posting, Thomas Griffith began to feel unwell.

Thomas Howell did all he could to aid his companion, even hoisting

an emergency flag to signal passing ships for help. But no rescue came. Griffith's condition

steadily worsened until he passed away several weeks later,

leaving Hal trapped in an isolated lighthouse with only the silent, lifeless form of his former

companion for company.
