Hey there. This is Jen, and I'm going deep today. Deeply vulnerable. Oprah once said,

0:08.0

I'm told by a friend of mine, that every single guest on her show asked her the same question.

0:15.4

Can you guess what it is? After the interview, every single guest asked her did i do okay and that makes me feel a little sad although

0:28.4

i know i would ask the same question we just want validation love and approval and this starts from

0:34.2

the time that were little kids i remember being raised on a farm in southwest Iowa.

0:40.5

My parents, Wanda and Dennis, had corn and soybeans, cattle and hogs.

0:47.8

We had a rooster named Red.

0:49.9

We had a goat at one time.

0:51.9

It was a blast.

0:52.8

We lived on this beautiful farm with almost no houses in sight, just green fields, and you can

0:59.4

look out and see hills with hay bales on them, and then rows of corn and blue sky, and we could

1:05.9

see the storm clouds rolling in from the west.

1:08.4

It was just stunning.

1:10.5

We worked really hard as kids. We would get up

1:13.3

and help with the hogs and we would walk beans and we would detassal corn sometimes. And it was a good

1:20.6

life. But also, my parents are of German and Danish descent, which means they're all about work and work ethic, and they

1:29.4

definitely taught us that. They're all about honesty. And I would say their third highest value is

1:35.0

that you do not brag and think too highly of yourself. So how did that play out for me in my

1:41.1

childhood? I don't know my brother's experience, but I suspect it's

1:44.8

somewhat similar. But for me, I feel like I was always seeking for love and approval. And I did have

1:52.9

love. It just wasn't verbalized in the way I would have preferred. My parents provided everything

1:58.9

we needed. My mom read us books every single night.
