Today's tale of the uncanny comes from a listener who wants to remain anonymous.

She says, dear Danny, one day my friend Annabel and I decided to spend the

afternoon at Hampton Court Palace we visited a temporary exhibition of paintings

that were in the old kitchens at one side of the gallery there was this most amazing

picture. It was of what looked like an alchemy lab full of coloured bottles and

test tubes. A man at a table was recoiling in horror at the site before him. Smoke was billowing from a chasm in the floor and from that the

devil was emerging pointing at the horrified man. Annabelle Knight spent ages looking at it completely captivated and talked about it all the way home.

The next day I rang up the palace to find out whether I could get a card or poster at the painting.

I got through to a chap in the paintings team who seemed

completely baffled. He said he would talk to the curator and a couple of hours later the

curator called me back and said there's absolutely no picture like that in the

exhibition. So the next day I went back the picture Annabel and I had spent so long staring at was no longer there. In its place was a brightly lit picture of an elderly man being visited from above by an angel.

The shells with all the weird potions and bottles were instead a large bookcase.

There was no chasm in the floor just marble tiles.

It was in effect the negative of our painting. I have absolutely no explanation for what happened. It's just very, very strange.
