Summary

This week, Curtis kicks off a two parter on the tough subject of guns in America. Part 1 is a Good Faith Classic where Curtis and David explored the tensions between gun culture and gun control in our hyper-polarized environment. They help us take a step back to think through the “how” of approaching such a complex issue versus just the “what” of our preferred policy outcome. 0:33.3	episodes is a part of the world that's really hard to make sense of. And that's on the topic of
0:40.4	guns and gun violence. I wanted to spend two episodes on this because I personally find it
0:48.6	such a struggle to make sense of this topic. I find that gun and gun violence assaults not just
0:56.2	the bodies of its victims, but in a sense it assaults our moral sensibilities. And I find in
1:02.4	myself a desire sometimes to just avert my eyes from the entire issue precisely because I struggle
1:09.0	so hard to make any meaning or any sense of it. And yet we have weekends like this past weekend
1:15.8	of the weekend of Juneteenth. I'm recording this right after this weekend of the Juneteenth.
1:21.0	And in California, we had, for example, one person killed in San Diego during a Juneteenth
1:27.8	celebration. We had eight injured in a gunfire at a house party in Carson. In Madera County,
1:34.5	we had a father and son both killed in two linked shootings. Even along the San Francisco
1:41.1	Wharf, we had a shootout breakout between cars traveling for a mile along the San Francisco Wharf.
1:48.6	But this wasn't isolated as only to California to my home state.
1:53.2	shootings grabbed headlines in at least seven states this past weekend in what is supposed to be
1:59.1	the celebratory weekend of fathers and freedom of the Juneteenth. In fact, we had 12 people
2:06.6	dying shootings from Friday to Sunday from Pennsylvania to Idaho. Dozens wounded some critically.
2:13.8	How do we make sense of all this? We're going to take two episodes. And the first episode for
2:19.4	this week is I'm actually going to replay a good faith classic where David and I in the past,
2:27.1	we actually tried to tackle the topic of gun culture. Now, let me be clear that gun violence and
2:35.3	gun culture are not the same thing. They're not the same thing. We are uniformly opposed to gun
