| 0:39.0 | Zen Buddhism being the first Buddhist practice that I engaged in was the idea of not knowing. |
| 0:47.0 | There's even a saying that not knowing is most intimate. |
| 0:53.9 | I think it means that if you don't know, |
| 0:56.9 | then you can really see clearly what's there. |
| 0:59.2 | You can know what's there in a closer way, |
| 1:01.1 | fuller way. But as soon as you have, way, fuller way. |
| 1:02.6 | But as soon as you have, we, in Zen, the idea |
| 1:05.4 | if you put a filter of knowing, understanding, expertise, |
| 1:10.9 | opinions between you and the experience or the person you're with that you can't really know them. |
| 1:16.0 | It's not very intimate. |
| 1:18.0 | And so not knowing, another teaching is something called great doubt. A certain kind of |
| 1:28.3 | spiritual doubt that is not in decisiveness, it's not uncertainty exactly. |
| 1:37.0 | It's questioning our assumptions, questioning our perceptions even, our understandings. And maybe it's like adding at |
| 1:49.9 | the end of some understanding we have, maybe not, maybe it's not like so, maybe not, so that |
| 2:00.7 | we're more open because many times we have these understandings and |
| 2:04.8 | interpretations and they close things down they limit us rather than making us |
| 2:09.4 | fresh and available for what happens next. |
| 2:18.9 | And so this idea of not knowing so that we can be more fully present for our experience can be very helpful in meditation. |
