| 0:59.0 | You're living in places where it's dawn and morning and good day for everyone else. |
| 1:12.0 | And there is a dangerous teaching in Buddhism. |
| 1:17.0 | So dangerous that I've been told that in one Buddhist country in South Asia, |
| 1:25.0 | that the government forbade Buddhist monks from teaching it, it's so dangerous. |
| 1:32.0 | And that's the danger that I'll be offering you today. |
| 1:37.0 | So I want to contextualize a little bit, or first I'll tell you what the danger is, |
| 1:42.0 | and that is practicing contentment. |
| 1:47.0 | And the reason why governments don't like it, business corporations' capitalism doesn't like it, |
| 1:54.0 | is that then people, if they're too content, they won't consume more. |
| 1:58.0 | If they're too content, they won't push themselves to work harder and build more, make more, make more money. |
| 2:12.0 | And in a certain way, many economies are based on discontent, so they can keep going. |
| 2:21.0 | Imagine the headlines. |
| 2:24.0 | The world became content, and economies failed everywhere. |
| 2:31.0 | So it's a dangerous teaching, and maybe it's not always appropriate. |
| 2:37.0 | So one of the ways of beginning a meditation practice is to settle down a little bit, |
| 2:45.0 | and then check in with oneself, and discern how you are. |
| 2:51.0 | Sometimes what's needed to just simple basic mindfulness. |
| 2:56.0 | Sometimes what's needed is a little bit of more focus on concentration to overcome a distracted mind. |
| 3:04.0 | Sometimes what's needed is truth telling, to really admit to oneself what's happening, |
