Okay, let's talk today about Swedes, and I'm not talking about the people or the country.

I'm talking about what we call over here in America as

Rutabaga, a lot of people call Swedes.

In fact, Charles Dowding, the legendary no-dig gardener,

when I went to his garden, kept referring to this plant

as Swedes, and I was confused because I really hadn't heard that

terminology much before and he said oh I believe you call them Rutobegas and I said okay

there we go now I understand these look amazing now what exactly are they because they're certainly not the most

popular root crop. They're similar to turnips. They have a sweeter flavor and

you want to actually grow them into a frost.

There's also some aesthetic difference, right?

So you've got a more yellow flesh on a rutabaga,

while turnips are more white and rutabaga, what's interesting is the foliage is sort of smooth.

It's waxy.

Turnips have a bit of a rough, almost weediest texture on the top of their greens. But besides these differences, the care for the plants

is very similar. It is a biennial plant, much like an onion, but we actually grow it just as an annual.

I think it's kind of interesting how many plants we grow

through a portion of their life and then just don't consider that

then there's an entire life cycle that we ignore because we harvest them before that happens.
