Summary

Science and flowers are two of my favorite things. Hydrangeas make fun experiments because the color of the flower depends on aluminum uptake which is greatly influenced by the PH of the soil. Blue flowers are formed with high aluminum uptake, where an absence produces pink flowers. My favorite color is periwinkle, so I try to find the middle ground. 0:00.0	So a plant that I've always loved the look of, it tends to, at least in my experience,
0:18.4	not perform super well in a very hot climate.
0:21.3	But I have seen it around here in San Diego, California, and then we also saw it at Natalie's
0:25.3	house, who is the epic assistant here on the team, and you've been growing that in a
0:29.0	grow bag right now.
0:30.0	Yeah, I have hydrangers in a grow bag, I have hydranger in a pot that just came in from
0:33.9	the store, and I have hydrangers in like a really pretty pot that was gifted to me from
0:38.6	a previous employer that's like maybe 12 gallons or so, like a pretty big one.
0:42.7	Yeah, and the thing that's interesting about them is that you can modulate the soil pH
0:47.8	and you get a real change in the plant.
0:50.0	Yeah, you go all the way from blue to pink with purple in between.
0:54.2	It's actually dependent on uptake of aluminum, but the way that you control that is by controlling
0:58.6	the pH of the soil.
1:00.6	So if the plant is taking up aluminum, which is like more on the acidic side, it's going
1:04.7	to be blue, and if you prevent the plant from uptaking aluminum, that it's going to be
1:08.6	on the pink side.
1:09.9	My favorite color is periwinkle, which is like right in the middle between purple and blue,
1:16.0	so you have to have a little bit of aluminum uptake, but you don't want too much to
1:21.8	put all the way blue, and so I'm always like playing this delicate dance.
1:26.4	I learned this in my hydroponic days, which is the early days of epic gardening, is because
1:31.0	in hydroponics you're controlling the pH very intricately, you have to know the nutrient
1:37.0	uptake bands, and you can actually Google this, and you can see it's basically a bell
