Anyways, we're talking about growing fruit trees from seed,

which is something I don't have a lot of experience in. I've grown maybe one lemon tree I think from seed, and I think I did an olive, but it's not, I mean I didn't really grow it all the way to fruition. It's just sort of an experiment back in the day.

So David, what do we need to know about growing fruit trees from seed?

Well the first thing is, you know, I always get objections when I say I want to grow fruit trees from seed

they say it's going to turn out bad it's like like people you know the kid wants to plant an apple seed and the first thing you tell them is no it won't grow into anything good don't do it and then we get me

We read about Johnny apple seeds like wait a minute didn't he starts up from seed? Oh, I don't know. I don't know. It doesn't work. You know it only worked back in the 1800s or whatever

but you know the the fact is is that because of people planting trees from

seed we have all the varieties that we have now people have over time planted from seed. We have all the varieties that we have now. People have over time

planted from seed or there have been accidental plantings from seed and somebody

says, oh that's a cool looking one. Let's save that, you know. And so first of all, yes, you can grow from seed and your chances of success are higher than you might think.

And additionally, there's actually no chance of failure if you know how to graft.

So like if you grew something from seed and it didn't turn out well and you ended up with a crab apple tree,

okay, first of all you can make really good pies and

apple cider out of crab apples or you can make apple cider vinegar or

whatever else, but let's say you just considered a failure, it's terrible.

You could cut that tree down part way

and graft in some pieces from another apple tree

that makes good fruit, and it will turn into that variety.
