Podcast this week with Kevin 40 of Giant Veg. So today we are talking about the final plant that we're going to grow to a giant level and that would be a giant cucumber.

How do you grow a giant cucumber from seed?

There's going to be some similarities in this episode to the world record

chili pepper but with a couple different techniques because of course a

cucumber is a much different plan and grows in a different manner than a pepper.

So Kevin, how do we approach growing a giant cucumber?

With difficulty.

No, in terms of giant cucumbers, my dad started off some of the very early strains of the giant cucumber variety and myself and my brother have developed that over time.

Some of the world's largest cucumbers are weight the world's heaviest cucumber weighs 27 pounds and Ian Neal holds the world's longest

cucumber which is just over 43 inches long and the seed from the world's longest cucumber

was developed by my dad back in the early

early 80s and we just developed those genetic lines going forward in terms of us

unfortunately we've developed Verticillium, which is what I spoke about in a previous podcast. And for us we had to look at hydroponic Rome because it was the only way for us to be able to grow cucumbers and to keep that seed line going.

Because we were growing in soils, the cucumber would basically grow, you'd set the fruit and the cucumber would literally

wilt and we didn't really know what it was and we engaged with a lead university in the UK and

took some analysis of the plant and they said the dreaded in the

darted

dreaded verticillium which is affecting growing institutions

and growing environments throughout the world

and whoever develops a cure for verdicilium will be a very rich lady or man.

For us in terms of cucumbers, growing in hydroponics they'll grow 250% faster than growing in soil and we start
