During World War II, pilots had a problem.

Sometimes their planes crashed, or they had problems inside the mechanical workings of the planes.

You know, like things would just go wrong that they couldn't explain. And they blamed it on Gremlins.

That was the word that they used.

You can find studies that try to explain where this word came from.

None of them are terribly convincing, and there's like a lot of competing theories.

But what we know for sure is that during like World War II and

even before then, there was conversations about gremlins screwing up various aviation operations.

And I was thinking about that because I have some bad news. We record this podcast in Riverside, and I have no idea how this happened, but somehow

or another, Marissa, my vivacious and intelligent co-host, and myself, a few weeks ago,

Joel Miller, for those who don't know, a few weeks ago recorded two episodes,

two amazing episodes, some of the very best we've ever done. And I regret to inform you

that there were gremlins somewhere in this platform, whether on my side or on the platform

itself, nobody knows for sure. But all I can say is that they chewed

through some wires. And as a result, we don't have an episode to share with you this week. And

grieves me to say, we don't have an episode to share with you next week. However, we are

going to be re-recording those two episodes. And if magic hits twice,

lightning, something, and the gremlins don't befoul our efforts, we will have two dynamite

episodes for you coming very soon. But I wanted to come and give you this announcement because, well,

you're probably expecting something from us. And you might as well find out about an obscure

something or other from the middle 20th century that might explain why something's going

screwy in your work too. I don't know. It certainly went screwy in ours. Anyway, I look forward
