Summary

The Black Sheep Squadron, officially known as VMF-214, was commissioned on July 1, 1942 and moved to the island of Espiritu Santo in the Solomon Islands for the purpose of eliminating Japanese air support in those islands so the Allies could gain access to those landing strips within striking distance of the Japanese mainland. Flying the 2,000 hp Chance-Voight Corsairs, and led by ace fighter pilot Greg Pappy Boyington, the squad blasted a record number of Japanese planes out of the skies within a 90 day period and did considerable damage to Japanese shipping and air bases within that time. This is their story.
