the history of piracy on the American

Great Lakes, which is to say you don't really need to hear the first part to understand

this one, especially since I'm about to give you basically all the relevant context from that

episode right here. Still, I do hope you'll listen to the full thing. Either way, here's that

refresher.

There are reports of piracy on the Great Lakes going back to the early 1700s when the main commercial traffic on them was furriers.

It seems entirely plausible that there was, in fact, fur piracy in this period, given that the area was largely lawless,

beaver furs were incredibly valuable, and we do know for a fact that there were pseudo-military skirmishes

between the two rival fur companies of the time, up to and including something that

resembled a war, which I'm guessing will be or already is a bonus episode for patrons.
