Summary

Grace Bonney (Design Sponge) talks about coming out at 30, why figuring out a delicate part of your identity in a public space isn't ideal, and why people not perceiving her as gay means she's constantly having to come out to people. She also talks about how the internet forces you into a place where you don't feel safe admitting mistakes, how blogging has changed, and why one day, she's going to step away from it all. Grace was 30 when she came out, and she talks about how that affected her whole life, of course,

1:23.5

I want to talk about your work and design sponge, but first, if it's okay,

1:26.0

I want to talk about sexuality, just in general.

1:32.0

Great, and I say that because most of the stories we hear about queer people revolve around a single narrative of knowing that you're queer from a very young age. And it seems like

1:36.2

that was not your story. And it's not many people's stories. And so you came out around 30,

1:41.1

is that right? I did. Yeah. When did you start to realize that yourself?

1:44.9

I knew something was different from as long as I can remember.

1:50.0

And I essentially had a girlfriend when I was in seventh grade but didn't quite realize that

1:55.8

was what was happening, except everyone else around me did.

1:59.3

And so it's such a like queer girl trope at least of like falling in love with your best friend.
