Asian Americans, I learned from a column by Saturn on Dume, the American Enterprise Institute

who writes for the Wall Street Journal editorial page that these countries, China, India, Philippines,

Korea, Vietnam and Japan make up 80% of what America calls Asian Americans. There is nothing

in the history or the culture or the direction or even the geography of those nations that

can be possibly argued to be all one. They're completely complicated. And they're in

lies some of the mystery of Asian Americans here in the 21st century with assumptions

about how they vote, where they live, what it is their ambition is for their children.

I welcome Saturn on Dume who introduces me into this complicated world. Saturn on you

and I have been reflecting about in my youth as opposed to your youth. None of these

distinctions showed up any time in all the school years I spent people asking me, what

are you? And there was no way for me to express that my mother was Persian and my father

was a quaker from Buckinghamshire, his ancestors. So we just didn't think about it. But today

I puzzle in your column, how Asian Americans present themselves when one of their parents

is not Asian or when one of their parents is from another country. Do we need more and

Very good evening, John. That's a good question. I don't know how they sort of, you know,

which box. I think a lot of people nowadays just also tick the box called other. But this

particular column is about people who do self identify as one or the other of the Asian

American groups. And as you pointed out, it's a very, very large umbrella. There are more

than 20 countries, people from more than 20 countries, all the way from Pakistan on one

end to East Timor or the other, are classified under the umbrella Asian American by the
