Hello, Ghost family. Sam here, coming to you with a preview of a new piece that I released today,

0:10.0

it's part of a brand new podcast called Sports Explains the World. And I am very privileged

0:16.6

to be the host of Sports Explains the World, which means that in most of the episodes,

0:22.0

you hear me at the beginning and the end of the episode, introducing the listener to the reporter

0:26.8

who's going to tell the story that week and then closing with some reflections on the story.

0:32.0

But in this particular story, I am the storyteller. I had the opportunity to report an episode

0:40.6

about the magic of baseball on the radio. And the reason I think that you folks would enjoy it

0:49.9

is because it's basically a family ghost story disguised as a sports documentary.

0:57.3

My jumping off point for this investigation is this memory that I have of my dad telling me

1:04.4

the definition of greatness, at least as far as he's concerned. And me pretending that I understood

1:12.8

what he said, but not actually understanding what he said. But knowing that the clue that I need

1:21.5

to figure it out is somewhere in the broadcast style of this legendary radio play by play guy named

1:29.9

Chuck Thompson. And so in this episode, I embark on a journey to understand what baseball play by

1:37.0

play broadcasters are doing. And in investigating this, I happen upon what turns out to be a very

1:43.6

profound answer to my dad's definition of greatness. I put absolutely everything that I have into

1:53.2

this story. I really did. And I am so excited for you all to hear this. So what I wanted to do here

2:02.6

was just play you the first five minutes of it. And if it captivates you and seems like something

2:08.6

you'd like to hear more of, you can go over to the sports explains the world podcast, which you

2:14.4

can find wherever you're listening to this. And look for the episode Good Company. And that's where

2:20.7

you'll be able to hear the full episode where among other things I get to talk to John Miller,

2:27.2

my childhood hero, the greatest living baseball broadcaster. And somebody whose voice lives in my

2:34.3

head full time. And also you get to hear archival recordings of Andy Fried, the Tampa Bay rays,
