Summary

Have you ever been let down before? Had someone say they’d do something and then they didn’t do it? As we start a new sermon series, a Critical Christmas, Nate Hilgenkamp teaches through Luke 1:10-20 and examines the story of Zechariah, answering the question of whether or not God can be trusted.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

-God makes promises to His people.

-God often talks about what He will do in the future, which requires a specific response from us: faith.

-What circumstance causes you to doubt and question God the most?

-God’s people often question God’s promises.

-Do you struggle to trust God with your future because you’ve forgotten what He’s done in the past because you are so consumed with your present circumstances?

-God fulfills His promises.

-This is how we often question God: “How because I am _______?”

-The answer to Moses’ and Zechariah’s question is the same answer to our questions: God is. He is who He says He is.

-God does what He promises.

-There are over 300 prophecies in the Old Testament that come true during Jesus’ time on earth. Multiple of which were completely out of His control.

-We have more in common with Zechariah than we think.

-As Christians, we are waiting for Christ to return. Are you ready for it?

-The story of Christmas tells us that God can be trusted.

Well, Merry Christmas, Harris Creek. It's so good to see you here this morning. Whether you're

0:18.1

here in the auditorium or more out there in the lobby, we're so glad you're here. And for those of you out there in the lobby, man, I know that you showed up this morning, not expecting to be sitting out there. You expected to be inside this room, but I've got good news. I sent our pastor, JP, out there to check, and he told me the Holy Spirit is out there. So y'all are gonna be fine. It's going to a great morning, whether you're in here or how they were so glad that you're here this morning. And my role on staff

0:43.3

is the college pastor. And as being the college pastor here at Harris Creek, a part of my role

0:47.8

is that I get to do a fair amount of weddings. And when I do weddings, I typically do their

0:52.6

premarital counseling as well. And whenever we do

0:54.9

premarital counseling. In fact, I had a premarital counseling meeting last night. One of the

1:00.2

questions that they typically ask me is, what do you remember about your wedding? Like, tell me about

1:05.0

your wedding. What are some of the great things that happen at your wedding? And you know,

1:09.0

weddings are a funny thing because they're one of the most

1:10.8

important days of your life, but it all just ends up being kind of a blur. And it's weird

1:15.6

the types of things that I remember, because I only really remember a handful of things. I

1:19.7

remember one that I was absolutely terrified in like the green room backstage as we were about

1:25.4

to go out. Like I was with all my groomsmen

1:27.7

and I was absolutely mortified. But maybe not for the reason that you think. Because I was terrified because one of my groomsmen, I don't know why we did this, but I had never put on my ring before. And he gave me his ring. He's like, hey, you should just try on my ring, see how it feels. So I put on his ring and I couldn't get it off.

1:46.6

So I'm telling you, it's right before we're about to go out there. And I've got guys trying to go grab soap, lotion, ice, whatever it is, to get this ring off. Otherwise, it was going to look like I'd gotten married to someone else earlier that day. That's one thing I remember. Another thing I remember is that for whatever reason on the dance floor, I ended up looking like this.

2:08.3

I mean, I was just wigging out the whole time.

2:11.9

Thanks.

2:12.9

I don't know how that wig got there.

2:14.8

I don't know who brought it, but there's a bunch of pictures of me looking like that. I don't know why I remember that, but I remember that. Another thing I remember from my wedding is something that I realized on our honeymoon. Because on our honeymoon, we were just kind of debriefing everything and talking about what a great experience it was, all the things we got to do, all the things that we got to see and all the people that we got to talk to. And my wife was like, you know, I never saw that guy. I'm not going to say his name, but I never saw that guy, one of your good buddies. I was like, wait, you're right. Like, I don't remember talking to him. This is a guy that I've known for a while we've spent a lot of life together and I was like, wait, you're right. Like, I don't remember talking to him.

2:51.3

This is a guy that I've known for a while. We've spent a lot of life together, and I was like, I, what's weird is I never ran into him or his girlfriend. I didn't talk to them. I'm like, surely they were there, so we were looking at some pictures. We couldn't find them in any pictures. and then while I'm on my honeymoon,
