Summary

Why do some people grow more than others? In this first message of our new series, Get Growing, Pastor Andy Wood explores God's design for spiritual growth and why it doesn't happen by accident. Drawing from Jesus' parable of the sower in Mark 4, Pastor Andy walks through four heart conditions that determine how we receive God's Word. A hard heart lets truth get snatched away before it takes root. A shallow heart receives the Word with excitement but has no depth to sustain it. A distracted heart gets crowded out by worry, wealth, and competing desires. But a receptive heart hears the Word, accepts it, applies it, and multiplies it. Growth is God's will for you, but it's not guaranteed. The condition of your heart makes all the difference. This message will challenge you to examine your own heart and take practical steps toward becoming someone who bears lasting fruit for God.

Let's dive in.

0:26.4

Today, we're starting a brand new message series called Get Growing.

0:31.5

This series really is about stepping into the fullness of who God's created you to be.

0:34.9

And we've been planning, preparing for some time for this whole series.

0:38.5

But as I was thinking about today and the launch of a brand new series, I was reminded of the journey of watching some people grow more than others over the course

0:44.7

of time. And it took me back to high school. I know we have a lot of different ages that we come from

0:50.2

in our church family. And some of you who are in high school right now, you'll know what I'm

0:55.3

talking about. Everybody gets a yearbook. You guys remember a yearbook that you would get at the end of

0:59.6

the year? And people sign the yearbook. There's one thing, there's one phrase that is more common

1:05.6

than any other phrase. And I know for a fact because chat GPT told me, that this one phrase is the most

1:12.8

common phrase written in yearbooks. What is it? It's never change. Never change. That's horrible

1:20.9

advice. Horrible advice. Who wants to stay the same the rest of their life? Now, I understand it's like

1:26.8

well-me meaning, you're

1:28.0

awesome, be you, all of that, be the authentic who God created you to be. That's really what it means.

1:33.1

But the truth is, there are some people that actually don't change over the course of time.

1:38.2

You ever notice that? Like some people, you meet them years down the road, and it's almost like

1:42.6

they're the same person plus 15 pounds.

1:45.5

And it's like, man, nothing changed in all of that. And this is true in any area of life

1:51.4

that there are some people that they just grow more than others. This is true in academics.

1:56.1

I remember even in school watching some kids, like in math, they have a greater propensity to get it so they grow
