Summary

It can be difficult to understand how we can be in a loving relationship with God when he imposes rules and laws upon us. 0:00.0	Hi, I'm Edwards Three, and welcome to all things Catholic where real faith meets real life. This upcoming Sunday the mass readings take us on our Lenton journey all the
0:18.4	way up to Mount Sinai. We go to that dramatic event in Exodus chapter 20 when God himself gave the law, gave the
0:27.1	10 commandments to the people of Israel. But when we hear this reading, we hear about those 10 commandments, thou shalt not
0:34.7	killed, thou shall not commit adultery, thou shall not steal. Sometimes we may just
0:38.8	wonder is religion just a bunch of rules? Is it just about a bunch of rules we have to follow? That's what many
0:43.9	people in the modern world think. When they look at Christianity, especially
0:47.9	Catholicism, they think of it as a lot of rule following. Don't do this, do this, say these prayers,
0:53.9	believe these things, avoid these things over here.
0:57.4	It's just a bunch of rules.
0:59.4	Is a relationship with God really that legalistic? Is that that complicated? Does God really care
1:05.6	about all the little details and every little choice I make in my life? You know, I just
1:09.2	want to be a nice person. I should just love people and be kind. Isn't that enough? Why do we need to have these
1:16.9	rules? Is religion just about the rules? What is the 10 commandments all about?
1:21.6	We're going to see at the heart of this, this dramatic story of God giving the 10 Commandments. It's not about God coming and saying, do this, don't do this, to prove yourself worthy, to prove yourself to be a good person, a good son or daughter of God.
1:35.4	That's not what this is about.
1:37.2	This is a gift.
1:39.0	This is a gift from our Heavenly Father.
1:41.6	That's what God is giving the people of Israel and that's what God gives us today
1:45.0	not just through the Ten Commandments, but through all of Sacred Scripture and all the wonderful
1:49.7	beautiful teachings of our Catholic Church. Do you see all of these things, these beautiful
1:55.0	teachings of God's law as a gift for our lives, for our happiness, or do we see them
2:00.5	as just hoops we have to jump through to prove ourselves to be worthy
